Murray Dyer

What I do

I am advising clients on all aspects of emissions trading and the process steps involved. This includes understanding carbon positions, the options available for carbon offsetting or emissions trading, evaluating trading strategies for risk management and carbon compliance, along with brokering greenhouse gas related transactions.

My expertise

I have spent the last 15 years working in financial and commodity markets, predominantly in commodity trading, trading strategy and commodity exchange roles and was also a certified Futures and Options Trader representative under the UK FSA.

I was involved in establishing an energy and commodity exchange in the UK in 1999 and have subsequently advised exchanges, brokers and trading companies on energy, emissions and commodity markets. This has included a project with a London based global energy company developing an energy trading strategy incorporating Renewable Obligation Contracts (ROC’s) and the EU Emissions Trading Scheme. I have completed a strategy project for a London based commodity markets broker streamlining its structured transactions desk.

I have worked as a consultant to Trayport the leading provider of electronic transaction systems to the international emissions market and since returning to New Zealand in 2005 have worked with New Zealand companies to assist in their understanding of emissions trading and market design issues. This includes presenting at the New Zealand Energy Summit Conference in July 2006, and more recently at the August 2007 Annual New Zealand Energy Emissions and Climate Change Management Forum.

What I enjoy about what I do

I enjoy creating commercial solutions to issues that directly impact our business and personal lives. Energy, commodities and climate change are all inter-related and are therefore seldom managed in isolation. It is interesting to evaluate and understand these inter-relationships and work with companies to facilitate and broker commercial solutions.

What I enjoy outside of work

Spending time with family and friends and playing all manner of sport. I also enjoy travelling and reading.

Examples of Climate Change work

  • I have worked with a number of brokers and exchanges that have required trading technology solutions for the emissions markets. This has included solutions for project based allowances in addition to the EU ETS market.
  • I project led a portfolio trading strategy project with a multi-national energy company in London that incorporated trading power, gas, emission units and Renewable Obligation Contracts.
  • I have advised New Zealand based energy and commercial companies on emissions trading strategies and offset options available under Kyoto and voluntary market mechanisms.
  • I presented at the 2006 New Zealand Energy Summit in Wellington on Emissions Trading Mechanisms and related issues on allocation plans and windfall profits, and at the New Zealand Energy Emissions and Climate Change Management Forum in August 2007.
